Bookmakers offer new bets on golf star Lucas Glover, the surprise winner of the US Open.
Bookmakers were celebrating on Monday (June 22nd) as the unfancied American Lucas Glover beat big names such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to claim the US Open title.Having won just one tournament before the major championship got underway at Bethpage Black, Glover started as a 225/1 outsider but emerged as the champion after four rain-disrupted rounds at the New York course.
Sports betting firms are now offering a host of new wagers on the 29-year-old, with Sky Bet making him 7/2 to win another PGA Tour title this year and 50/1 for another major championship in 2009.
Glover is also 6/4 to miss the cut at the British Open next month and 80/1 to retain his US Open title next year, when the tournament will take place at Pebble Beach in California.
Commenting on the unlikely winner, Sky Bet's Andy Thorp said: "Although not a complete skinner, his best ever major finish was 20th so most punters had given up on him Only a few shrewd customers took the 225/1."
The British Open gets underway at Turnberry on July 16th, with Padraig Harrington defending his title.
