US Open creates interest in sports betting markets for golf fans.
The first round of the US Open was badly disrupted by rain yesterday (June 18th), but the weather does not seem to have deterred sports betting customers.According to William Hill, £1 million was wagered by punters before the tournament got underway at Bethpage Black, a notoriously tricky public course in New York.
World number one Tiger Woods is aiming to defend the title he won at Torrey Pines in California last year, but the bookmaker is hoping that the players ranked two and three in the rankings do not have a good tournament.
"We have got a fantastic book and the only real disaster for us would be either Phil Mickelson or Paul Casey [to win]," said Rupert Adams, spokesperson for William Hill.
With the players returning to complete their first rounds today following yesterday's washout, the US Open looks set to run on until Monday or even Tuesday next week.
Woods, who carded a four-over-par 74 in his opening round, is the current favourite at 7/2 with Paddy Power, while Mickelson can be backed at 8/1.
