Bookmakers take new bets on England as qualification for World Cup gets nearer.
Two more goals for Wayne Rooney against Andorra last night (June 10th) mean that one sports betting firm now makes the Manchester United striker just 2/1 to become England's all-time top goalscorer. The 23-year-old was also on target against Kazakhstan last weekend and has now scored 24 goals in his England career, meaning he remains on course to beat Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 49 international goals.
William Hill makes Rooney 2/1 to break that record and is also offering 3/1 on David Beckham surpassing the benchmark for England caps set by Peter Shilton.
The 6-0 victory over Andorra at Wembley puts England on the brink of the World Cup in South Africa next year, having won seven out of seven qualifying matches under Fabio Capello.
Most bookmakers now make England fourth favourites to lift the trophy behind Brazil, Spain and Argentina, with Ladbrokes pricing World Cup glory for Capello's side at 6/1.
They are also 7/2 with William Hill to win the remaining three qualifying matches, with Croatia next up for England at Wembley on September 9th.
