New roof at Wimbledon proves to be popular bet with tennis punters.
Bookmaker William Hill is facing a five-figure payout if the new roof for Wimbledon's Centre Court remains unused this week. The retractable canopy was installed to avoid rain delays at the tennis championships, but so far the warm and dry weather conditions have meant it has not been required.
William Hill was offering 10/1 on the roof not being used before the tournament, but that price has been shortened to 3/1 as the latest forecasts are predicting hot and sunny weather in London this week.
"If the roof is not used it will cost us a five figure payout - but that will pale into significance alongside the anticipated £1 million plus we'll pay out to Andy Murray fans if he goes all the way," said Graham Sharpe, spokesperson for the bookmaker.
The British number one is now 2/1 to win Wimbledon this year, making him second favourite behind Roger Federer, who is priced at 4/7.
Murray faces Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the fourth round today, with Federer taking on Sweden's Robin Soderling.
