Tom McEvoy, the winner of the 1983 WSOP Main Event, has beat out a field of 19 other former WSOP champions to win the inaugural Champions Invitational. He enjoyed a hot Day 2 performance, and received the first ever Binion Cup as his prize, along with a vintage, fully restored 1970 Corvette Stingray convertible.

When presented with the cup, McEvoy quipped “This is the first time he [...Jack Binion...] handed me a trophy instead money.”

McEvoy outlasted an entire field of poker world champions to make it to heads up play against Robert Varkonyi, the 2002 Main Event winner. McEvoy sealed his title by taking a higher flush.

Jeffrey Pollack, the WSOP President and Commissioner, said “The Champions Invitational has brought together the greatest names in the game of poker”, speaking of the twenty champions that took part in the event, including popular stars such as Peter Eastgate, Huck Seed, Doyle Brunson, and Phil Hellmuth.

McEvoy said of his win that “I think I proved that I can compete at the highest level against the best player in the world.” He also said “I’m totally overjoyed. One of the reasons I was so determined to win this was to re-establish myself and prove, not only to myself, but to everybody else, that I can still do this”.

Of his prize, he said “The car was just the frosting on the cake.”
