Low-cost airline first announced plans for casino gaming on its flights in 2005.
An in-flight casino gambling service is still in development by low-cost airline Ryanair. The carrier first announced plans to offer on-board gambling in 2005, but a recent statement from chief executive Michael O'Leary has revealed that the system is still in the pipeline.
A spokesperson for Ryanair told the Wall Street Journal: "Ryanair's onboard gaming systems are still in the development-and-research phase with the focus on launching the service in three to five years."
The publication noted that the UK Gambling Commission's guidance on licensing currently states that gambling on aircraft is illegal, but Mr O'Leary said the company does not anticipate any licensing problems.
According to eGaming Review, Ryanair may have to ensure that all gambling on its planes takes place in international airspace, thereby avoiding any issues with licensing.
In November 2005, Mr O'Leary suggested that revenue from in-flight gambling could eventually replace air fares.
"Ultimately entertainment will be where the money is. It would transform ancillary revenues and profits," he told the BBC.
