New casino is coming to Great Yarmouth

Norfolk resort will eventually open a new casino after upgrades to seafront area.

The new gambling venue planned for Great Yarmouth should make a contribution to the ongoing regeneration of the Norfolk resort.

According to the Norwich Evening News, approximately £21 million has been spent on rebuilding the town's seafront area, with the new outer harbour now reaching completion.

The local authority is keen for the casino, which will hold one of the eight large gaming licences handed out by the government last year, to play a role in Great Yarmouth's rebirth.

Tim Howard, head of regeneration and environment at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, told the newspaper that the casino contract will be awarded to whichever proposal shows the greatest benefit for the town.

He said: "Yarmouth, definitely in terms of securing investment, has punched hugely above its weight in the past ten years.

"The opportunities are out there for Yarmouth. We have got the capacity to capture these opportunities and make something of them."

Several proposals for the casino licence have already been made public, with local Pleasure Beach boss Albert Jones one of the interested parties.
