Mecca Bingo club continues to lobby for a reversal of the government's bingo tax hike.

Players at a Sheffield bingo venue have come up with a new way of protesting against the government's recent tax hike.

The Mecca Bingo hall held two silent games on Wednesday (June 22nd), with the numbers appearing on a display screen in the absence of a bingo caller, the Sheffield Star reports.

Club members took part in the games to protest against the tax regime, which saw chancellor Alistair Darling increase bingo duty from 15 per cent to 22 per cent in April's Budget.

General manager of the club Sarah Whitaker told the newspaper that members have sent nearly 600 letters to local MP Richard Caborn over the tax issue.

An amendment to the finance bill was recently proposed by Stewart Hosie MP, Treasury spokesperson for the Scottish National Party, to reverse the increase, but it was defeated in a parliamentary vote.

Mr Hosie subsequently claimed that Labour MPs had "hung the bingo industry out to dry".
