Jeremy Browne is supporting the bingo industry

Taunton MP heads to local bingo hall to publicise the industry's tax protests.

Jeremy Browne was drafted in to call the numbers at Taunton's Mecca Bingo hall this week as his campaign against the bingo tax hike goes on.

The Taunton MP is one of several politicians around the country urging the government to reconsider its stance on bingo duty, which was increased from 15 per cent to 22 per cent in April.

To publicise the campaign, he completed a shift as a bingo caller at the Mecca venue alongside staff members May Little and Monika Borska-Ulatowska, the Somerset County Gazette reports.

Mr Browne told the newspaper: "The only gamblers who are being clobbered with the higher 22 per cent rate are the people who enjoy visiting their local bingo club.

"1,900 customers visit Taunton Mecca Bingo every week - on Sunday evenings there are always several hundred people in the club."

According to the Liberal Democrat MP, 31 UK bingo clubs have closed down in the last year.

About 300 bingo players gathered in Westminster last week to protest against the tax hike.
