Schumacher will return to F1 and drive for Ferrari

Bookmakers expect increase in motor racing turnover as Schumacher confirms his return.

Bookmakers are anticipating a major increase in Formula One betting due to Michael Schumacher's surprise return to the sport.

The seven-time world champion will drive for Ferrari at next month's European Grand Prix as a replacement for Felipe Massa, who was badly injured in a crash in Hungary last weekend.

William Hill is offering 16/1 on Schumacher winning the race in Valencia on August 23rd, although the sports betting firm is worried that the German star's comeback could result in a sizeable payout.

"The return of Schumacher could see turnover increase by up to five times and if Schumacher could win it the bookies will be paying out millions," explained spokesperson Rupert Adams.

Paddy Power is offering 7/2 on a podium finish for Schumacher in Valencia, while punters expecting him not to finish the race can get odds of 15/8.

The 40-year-old is the most successful Formula One driver of all time and took part in his last Grand Prix in October 2006.
