England all-rounder Flintoff will not play Test cricket after the Ashes
Andrew Flintoff's decision to retire from Test match cricket at the end of the current Ashes series is likely to have a big impact on the sports betting markets, it has been claimed.According to Rupert Adams, a spokesperson for bookmaker William Hill, increased betting on the Ashes can be expected in the short term due to the added interest generated by Flintoff's impending retirement, although this positive trend is not expected to last.
"Freddie will be sorely missed and we could see less money on England in future matches but it does add extra spice to the current series, which is now certain to break betting records," he confirmed.
Flintoff has been named in England's team for the second Ashes test at Lord's today despite an injury scare, although William Hill is offering odds of 25/1 that he will retire hurt and 12/1 that he will bat with a runner.
Meanwhile, he is now priced at 25/1 to win Sports Personality of the Year, from 33/1 prior to yesterday's announcement.
