Bookmaker William Hill has been left stunned by Amir Khan's title win
William Hill has slashed the odds for Amir Khan to become BBC Sports Personality of the Year after he secured the WBA light-welterweight title at the MEN Arena in Manchester on Saturday (July 18th).The bookmaker has admitted that the fact Khan was able to secure a world title at all, let alone at the tender age of 22, came as a surprise, with odds of 16-1 available for the boxer to become world champion at any time in his career as little as 18 months ago.
According to William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams, the lack of faith shown in Khan by the bookmaker has been fully exploited by the British public.
"We were astonished by the support for Amir Khan, even at a short price and we are on the canvas," he commented.
"Khan is a very popular guy and if he gets another big fight this year then he is a genuine contender for the Sports Personality of the Year."
A fight against Ricky Hatton is now on the cards for Khan, whose odds for Sport Personality success have been cut to 10/1 from 25/1.
The Pride of Bolton successfully challenged Andreas Kotelnik for the light-welterweight belt, outpointing the Ukrainian on all three judges' scorecards courtesy of his lightening speed and newfound ability to absorb punches.
