Sports betting firms take money on relegation from the Championship for Newcastle United.

Bookmakers have seen punters back Newcastle United to be relegated from the Championship as uncertainty continues to surround the club's future.

With less than two weeks until the new season gets underway in English football's second tier, odds on Newcastle being relegated for the second straight season have been cut from 16/1 to 10/1 by William Hill.

The north-east side were beaten 6-1 in a pre-season friendly at Leyton Orient on Saturday (July 25th), while off the pitch owner Mike Ashley is still trying to sell the club and a permanent manager is yet to be appointed.

"It is a worrying time for Newcastle fans and we are starting to see money for them to be relegated not promoted," said Rupert Adams, spokesperson for the sports betting firm.

The bookmaker has pushed its odds on Newcastle making an immediate return to the Premier League by winning the Championship out from 5/1 to 6/1.

Meanwhile, Paddy Power is offering 28/1 on the Magpies winning the FA Cup or Carling Cup in 2010.
