On Sunday, the World Series of Poker passed a major milestone – its payout total having passed $1 Billion over the lifespan of the tournament.

The World Series of Poker first ran in 1970, and has since grown to become the largest and most popular poker tournament in the world.

World Series of Poker president Jeffrey Pollack said “It’s nice to reach this milestone during the 40th annual WSOP. What’s most remarkable is that nearly two thirds of this amount has been awarded in just the last four years. Poker is alive and well and here to stay.”

The total figures for this year’s World Series of Poker will be released on Tuesday, July 7th, after the closure of registration for the Main Event, the $10,000 buy-in Texas Hold’em tournament.

The prize pool for this year is expected to be in excess of $155 Million – a huge amount considering that the total for the first 36 years of the tournament added together was $354 Million.
