Bingo hall in Blackpool is weathering the economic storm

Loyal customers help Blackpool bingo venue to stay positive.

A family-run bingo venue in Blackpool claims it is looking forward to a bright future, despite the doom and gloom currently surrounding the industry.

The Empire Bingo club in the Marton area of Blackpool opened in 1965 and is now the oldest independent bingo hall on the Flyde coast, the Blackpool Gazette reports.

As the venue's 35th anniversary approaches, owner Elaine Bottomley is optimistic about its future because the business is supported by a strong local bingo community.

"We believe our loyal customers who have been there with us through thick and thin over the past 35 years are the most important thing and with their continued support we hope to be there for the next 35 years," Ms Bottomley told the newspaper.

Local woman Sue Barnes, a member of the Empire club, added: "I've been coming here for about eight years and it's fantastic, everybody knows everybody."

However, other bingo venues in Blackpool are struggling, with the Gazette recently reporting that Orion Bingo in Cleveleys is set to close in the next four to seven weeks.
