Casino supporters believe a new venue will boost Scarborough's tourist appeal.
Potential casino developers were invited to an open day in Scarborough on Thursday (September 24th) to discuss plans for a second gambling venue in the town. The local authority was granted permission to build a new small casino by the government in 2007 and is set to invite applications for the licence shortly.
Supporters of the project claim that it will boost the North Yorkshire resort's image as a tourist destination and attract more visitors to the area, although there are also some opponents to the plan.
David Archer, strategic director at Scarborough Borough Council, told the BBC that he believes another casino development is "entirely consistent with the town's image".
He said: "There is a real potential for a casino to create new investment, new jobs and to broaden the offer of Scarborough as a premier tourist destination."
The town's existing gaming venue is the Opera House Casino, which offers roulette, blackjack, slot machines, three-card poker and weekly Texas hold'em poker tournaments.
