Liberal Democrat has voiced his support for the beleaguered British bingo industry.
Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington, has become the latest politician to speak out against the recent bingo tax hike.A number of bingo halls have closed in the UK this summer, with many operators struggling to stay in business after the government announced its plan to increase duty payments from 15 per cent to 22 per cent.
Mr Brake described the hike as "yet another example of misdirected taxation" and claimed that the government should be supporting bingo halls in the face of challenging economic conditions.
"It is vital that we protect these local businesses, particularly at a time of such economic instability. Bingo halls are a familiar part of the local environment," the Liberal Democrat MP said.
Mr Brake is one of several MPs to sign a Downing Street petition asking the government to reconsider its taxation policy for bingo operators.
He is also due to complete a 30-kilometre duathlon race to raise money for a local charity in his south London constituency in October.
