Scotland's World Cup Failure Turns The Odds Against Burley

George Burley's future as Scotland manager looks uncertain

Sports betting firms take wagers on the identity of next Scotland manager.

Scotland's failure to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa has upset the odds of the country's manager hanging on to his job.

On Wednesday night (September 9th) Scotland went down 1-0 to Holland at Hampden Park, effectively taking away any guarantees of George Burley continuing as manager.

The Scottish Football Association is due to review Burley's post, but the bookmakers have seen support for him being replaced with former Scotland international Gordon Strachan.

Ladbrokes has the former Manchester United and Leeds United player as the even-money favourite to replace Burley, followed by Jim Jeffries at 5/2 and Walter Smith, Graeme Souness and Bily Davies at 8/1, 10/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison told Betting Pro: "Burley has reached the end of the road and Strachan is in pole position to take up the reins.

"He's experienced, available and Scottish. If he wants it, it's hard to see it being offered to anyone else."

Burley has expressed his desire to keep the job.
