Sports Betting: Bookmakers Hail Del Potro

Bookmakers relieved as Federer fails to win his sixth consecutive US Open crown.

Bookmakers are celebrating today (September 15th) after Juan Martin del Potro sealed a surprise victory over Roger Federer in the US Open final.

World number one Federer had won the previous five finals at Flushing Meadows and was a strong favourite to triumph again in New York, but del Potro twice fought back from a set down to claim the trophy.

William Hill estimated that the Argentine player's 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 over Federer resulted in a £500,000 swing in their payout on the final.

"Del Potro's victory was a massive result for us and we are very happy to welcome another player into the top ranks," commented William Hill spokesperson Rupert Adams.

Now ranked number five in the world behind Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, Del Potro is 11/8 with William Hill to win another Grand Slam title in 2010.

Murray, who went out in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows this year, is currently 4/5 with Paddy Power to claim his first major title next year.
