Bingo forms part of a new police campaign in Abingdon

Bingo sessions are being used to raise awareness of the dangers posed by burglars.

Police officers in Abingdon are using bingo to raise awareness of home security issues and distraction burglaries.

In an attempt to reduce the number of elderly people falling prey to criminals on their doorstep, community support officers are running a new campaign that combines games of bingo with safety advice, the Oxford Mail reports.

Chris Linzey, the officer who came up with the scheme, is now looking to take his project further afield after running several sessions at the Abbey Centre in Abingdon.

"Bingo is a way of trying to get to as many people as we can by going to where they already are," he told the newspaper.

Local woman Sadie Breakspear said that the scheme has helped her to understand security threats, adding: "It's made me very much more aware about what goes on."

A recent survey by Gala Bingo revealed that Harrogate is the luckiest place in the UK for bingo wins, while the north-east is currently the most fortunate region.
