A new casino could be on the way in Mildura, Australia

The city of Mildura is the proposed location for a new casino resort plan in Australia.

A new casino resort is in the pipeline for the Australian city of Mildura, it has emerged.

Citing a report from the Sunraysia Daily, the Herald Sun reveals that businessman John Haddad plans to convert Mildura's Grand Hotel into a casino complex.

Mr Haddad, the former deputy chairman of the Federal Hotels Group and Crown Management, expects the gambling complex in Victoria to cost approximately A$300 million (£169 million).

According to the newspaper, he told 3AW Radio that he has already spoken to Victoria premier John Brumby about the plan.

"It would be marvellous for Mildura and also for Victoria," Mr Haddad said.

"But at this stage it is my initiative - it's not something that has been developed through the government. I just mentioned it to the premier."

Situated on the banks of the Murray River with a population of approximately 50,000, Mildura lies at the heart of one of Australia's most famous areas for food and wine production.
