Sega has been granted an online gambling licence in Alderney.
Video game developer Sega is set to diversify its business by launching an online gambling service, according to reports. The Japanese firm was granted a gaming licence by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) this week, shortly after it confirmed a partnership deal with gambling software provider Playtech.
It is thought that the company known for bringing the world Sonic the Hedgehog and launching games consoles such as the Mega Drive and Dreamcast will now offer casino and poker facilities to online gamers.
"The AGCC provides the most comprehensive gaming regulations with the strictest requirements and, as such, is recognised as the most reputable online gaming jurisdiction," read a statement from Sega Games.
"We are pleased to be approved by this leading authority."
Despite its initial success with arcade and home gaming systems, Sega stopped manufacturing consoles in 2001 and began to concentrate on software development for third parties.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been the company's official mascot since his first appearance in a game for the Mega Drive and Genesis in 2001.
