Sports betting firm reveals that Sea The Stars cost it approximately £1 million by winning the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Bookmaker William Hill was left facing a payout of approximately £1 million after Sea The Stars completed a remarkable victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.John Oxx's brilliant colt sealed his place in racing history by becoming the first horse to win the 2,000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the Longchamp feature.
Sea The Stars was well supported by punters in the lead-up to the Arc and William Hill estimated that his victory in France would cost sports betting operators dearly.
"We may have lost, but racing has won," said spokesperson Kate Miller, who described the three-year-old as "the ultimate racehorse".
"Sea The Stars's win will be around a £1 million loser for the firm, but even we can't begrudge his win," she added.
After producing a late surge to claim victory by two lengths from Youmzain, Sea The Stars adds his name to the long list of other great Arc victors such as Ribot, Dancing Brave and Montjeu.
He is now 4/6 with William Hill to win the Breeders' Cup Classic in California next month.
