Members of the sports betting industry have questioned Gerry Sutcliffe's plan.
The government has requested that UK bookmakers contribute to a new voluntary fund designed to promote the development of grassroots sport, it has emerged.According to the Guardian, sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe recently wrote to key figures in the betting industry and sports governing bodies outlining his plans for the fund, which will be overseen by Sport England.
In his letter, Mr Sutcliffe claims that the system represents "an opportunity for all parties to show goodwill", while stating that contributions from bookmakers should be "serious and significant".
However, representatives of the British betting industry have not reacted positively to the proposal.
Clive Hawkswood, chief executive of the Remote Gambling Association, told the newspaper that Mr Sutcliffe has so far failed to carry out an adequate consultation with industry members.
"Neither the online or offline sectors have been consulted as a group," he said.
Last month, online bookmaker Sportingbet.com announced that it will be making a new voluntary payment to the Horserace Betting Levy Board.
