A drought in China has left the Macau casino industry facing the prospect of water rationing.
A critical shortage of drinking water is threatening to severely damage the gambling industry in Macau.With southern China suffering a severe drought in recent weeks, reservoir levels in the neighbouring resort of Zhuhai - a key water supplier to Macau - have reached a ten-year low.
Hong Kong newspaper the Standard reports that Macau only has access to enough drinking water for the next ten days and may be forced to start a rationing policy.
Macau legislator Au Kam-san told the publication that the Chinese government has so far made no attempt to address the situation.
"The government has not told us of any contingency plans Macau is wasting a lot of drinking water in many areas," he commented.
According to the Times, any spell without water would represent a "devastating blow" to the former Portuguese colony's casino and hotel industry, which prides itself on offering high-stakes gambling in luxury surroundings.
Sands China, the Macau subsidiary of US casino giant Las Vegas Sands, recently announced plans to raise up to $3.8 billion (£2.2 billion) by listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
