Macau Casinos Threatened By Water Shortage

The casinos of Macau could be facing a serious water shortage

A drought in China has left the Macau casino industry facing the prospect of water rationing.

A critical shortage of drinking water is threatening to severely damage the gambling industry in Macau.

With southern China suffering a severe drought in recent weeks, reservoir levels in the neighbouring resort of Zhuhai - a key water supplier to Macau - have reached a ten-year low.

Hong Kong newspaper the Standard reports that Macau only has access to enough drinking water for the next ten days and may be forced to start a rationing policy.

Macau legislator Au Kam-san told the publication that the Chinese government has so far made no attempt to address the situation.

"The government has not told us of any contingency plans … Macau is wasting a lot of drinking water in many areas," he commented.

According to the Times, any spell without water would represent a "devastating blow" to the former Portuguese colony's casino and hotel industry, which prides itself on offering high-stakes gambling in luxury surroundings.

Sands China, the Macau subsidiary of US casino giant Las Vegas Sands, recently announced plans to raise up to $3.8 billion (£2.2 billion) by listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
