William Hill took several four-figure wagers on Pacquiao to beat Cotto in Las Vegas.
The WBO welterweight title clash between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto created an industry turnover of £1.5 million for UK sports betting firms, it has been claimed.William Hill reported that the bout in Las Vegas on Saturday night (November 14th) produced the bookmaker's highest ever turnover for a boxing match involving non-British fighters.
Odds-on favourite Pacquiao stopped Cotto in the 12th round to become a five-weight world champion and move closer to an eagerly-anticipated meeting with the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"We took over two dozen four-figure bets for Manny, but got out of trouble with the 12th-round stoppage, which was a 22/1 shot and not that popular with punters," commented William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe.
The bookmaker has now installed Pacquiao at 6/4 to beat Mayweather, who is the current favourite at 1/2.
Following the victory over Cotto, BBC boxing correspondent Mike Costello described the Filipino's prospective clash with Mayweather as the "great showdown that everybody in boxing wants to see".
Pacquiao has now won 50 of his 55 fights, with his last defeat coming at the hands of Erik Morales in March 2005.
