Sports betting firms took several large wagers on David Haye to defeat Russia's Nikolay Valuev.
David Haye's world heavyweight title clash with Nikolay Valuev on Saturday night (November 7th) attracted bets totalling £5 million, according to one bookmaker.William Hill estimated the industry-wide figure after revealing that one punter wagered £16,000 on Haye in the opening seconds of the WBA bout in Nuremberg.
The 29-year-old went on to defeat Valuev on points following an impressive tactical performance against the 7ft Russian, who looked close to going down under a fierce combination from Haye in the final round.
William Hill now prices the British boxer at 4/1 to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, making him third favourite behind Jenson Button (8/13) and Jessica Ennis (3/1).
"Haye has arrived at the right time to replace Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton as boxing's next British superstar - and punters love betting on him," commented Graham Sharpe, spokesperson for the sports betting firm.
The Londoner is also 8/15 to win his next fight against mandatory challenger John Ruiz, the former two-time WBA champion.
