Casino denied 24-hour opening

Casino 24-hour opening plans rejected.

Plans for a 24-hour casino in Edinburgh have been rejected by licensing leaders.

Gala Casinos wanted to allow for all-day gaming at its Maybury centre, which would have been the first in the city to do so.

The casino company already runs all-hours centres in Glasgow and Aberdeen, but the Edinburgh proposals were rejected due to concerns about antisocial behaviour.

Currently the casino closes at 06:00 then reopens at 11:00 GMT, but the new gaming licence would have allowed it to stay open round the clock.

Ewan Macgregor, group legal counsel for Gala, said: "There has not been a problem in other parts of the country and I don't think it'll be a problem here."

He added that granting the application would not set a precedent to allow other casinos to open 24 hours saying that it was necessary to "judge each application on its merits".

The Gala Coral Group operates close to 2,000 licensed betting offices, 148 bingo clubs, 27 casinos, two greyhound stadia, a UK telephone betting business and an online gambling business.
