Online casinos in Poland are no longer allowed to sponsor football teams due to stricter gambling laws recently introduced.
The new laws applied to online casinos in Poland leave them unable to continue their sponsorship of the country's football clubs, according to Online Casino Advisory.Under the new regulations, advertising gambling is no longer permitted, while slot machines are confined to approved casino premises.
However, the advertising ban also means that online casinos based in Poland must cease their sponsorship of local football teams.
Simon Chadwick, a UK sports business professor, told the Wall Street Journal: "Given the scarcity of sponsors and the scarcity of premium fees, to lose a significant proportion of companies that are investing very heavily in the sport is potentially very serious," reports Online Casino Advisory.
With at least three online casinos known to be affected by the regulations, some Polish teams now claim they will be unable to compete against their counterparts elsewhere in Europe.
The new rules were introduced following fears that senior Polish gambling figures had become influential enough to affect the government's decision-making.
