Gambling bosses have been asked to apply for a casino licence.
Scarborough Council has invited gambling bosses to apply for a licence to run a new casino in the town.Along with other local authorities including Torbay and Luton, Scarborough has been granted permission to run a casino, something which the council thinks will prove beneficial, the Scarborough Evening News reported.
Under the Gambling Act 2005, a small casino is one which has a maximum of 80 category B gaming machines with a jackpot of up to £4,000.
It also has to have a minimum gaming area of 750 sq m.
David Archer, the council's strategic director, said in a report: "Anecdotal evidence from the casino industry suggests that there remains enough interest in the casino application process to support this decision and that to delay the process could see casino operators making investments in areas other than Scarborough."
The act aims to help promote socially responsible gambling and strives to protect children and vulnerable adults from getting into difficulties.
