Scottish runner takes Scottish Grand National title for first time in 28 years.
Bookmakers may be shocked that a home-grown runner took the Scottish Grand National title, the first time this has occurred in 28 years.Trainer Andrew Parker beat off his opposition with horse Merigo and is the first winner trained in Scotland to scoop the £200,000 prize since Ken Oliver rode to victory on Cockle Strand.
Many bookmakers may not have even been working in the business during that 1982 victory.
Speaking to the Scottish Daily Record Ray Green, owner of nine-year-old Merigo, said: "This is a dream come true and something I've wanted to do ever since I came into racing."
He added he was worried about the ground at Ayr Racecourse affecting the horse's chances but staff made sure it was in a safe condition.
The Scottish Grand National was held at the weekend and is sponsored by bookmakers Coral.
It is run over four miles and half a furlong.
