Online Gambling Fans Hit By Octopus Retirement

Paul the Octopus predicted all seven of Germany's World Cup matches correctly.

Online gambling fans who have relied on Paul the Octopus to make a profit from this summer's World Cup may be disappointed to know the creature is going into retirement.

The cephalod's keepers at the Oberhausen aquarium in western Germany have announced he will no longer predict the outcome of sports matches.

Paul rose to fame during the tournament in South Africa, correctly forecasting the results of all seven of Germany's ties.

He also picked out Spain as the winners prior to their final against the Netherlands on Sunday (July 11th), which they won 1-0.

The octopus had previously had a slightly less impressive record in Euro 2008, when he managed four correct predictions out of six as Germany reached the final.

His retirement could mean online gambling users evaluating odds offered by bookmakers will turn elsewhere for inspiration.

Germany finished third in this year's World Cup, defeating Uruguay in the bronze play-off match.
