Monnette beat the largest ever field in the event.
Poker player John Monnette will go down in history after winning the largest ever Eight-Game Mix Tournament at the World Series in Las Vegas. It is the first time Monnette has triumphed in an official World Series of Poker (WSOP) event and earns him $278,144 (£172,630).
Organisers will be especially pleased that the 23rd gold bracelet contest out of 58 being held in the Nevada city attracted a full house.
This means attendance at the World Series is still up by double digits in comparison to the turnout recorded in 2010.
In order to claim the latest title, Monnette had to overcome the challenges of 488 other poker players, all of whom were vying for the prize at the Rio casino.
The 29-year-old stayed cool to beat the likes of Eric Buchman, who finished as the runner-up, while John Juanda was also in the top ten.
Earlier this week, WSOP revealed two Frenchmen – Elie Payan and Bertrand Grospellier – had won gold bracelet events.
