The popularity of online gambling in Western Europe can be traced to the legislation in these countries, it has been suggested.Jesper Sogaard, chief executive officer of BettingExpert.com, a subscription-based betting advisory service, explained that the legislation has meant that "you'll see pretty much the same attitude towards online gambling in all of Western Europe".
People, he observed, have for decades been used to having just one or a few state licensed bookmakers or casinos to gamble at in these countries.
"Betting has been something a majority of the population are accustomed with and when the internet wave of online gambling really took off in the early 2000s, the possibilities of gambling were dramatically enhanced," Mr Sogaard remarked.
He added that this allied to the emergence of high-speed internet explains why online gaming has become so popular in Western Europe.
In the US, of course, online gambling has been hit by legislation introduced in April designed to restrict the practice.
