Schleswig-Holstein, a German state, has opened the way to liberalising the region's online gaming market, online poker players may be among those interested to learn.From March 2012, in fact, any commercial operator will soon be able to apply for licences for web-based betting.
The decision distinguishes Schleswig-Holstein from Germany's 15 other states, the Financial Times has reported.
According to Hans-Jorn Arp, Christian Democrat leader in Schleswig-Holstein's state assembly, the region was the first to "recognise the importance of the internet" in the gaming industry.
He added that the "most modern betting law in Europe" could produce an annual 60 million euros in tax revenue.
This comes shortly after Italian gaming authority AAMS announced that from November onwards, online gaming fans will be able to use betting software and access poker cash games online.
AAMS confirmed that it has set a deadline for November to launch poker cash services.
