The idea that a rapid expansion of the UK's casino industry will lead to more problem gamblers is inaccurate. That is according to a spokesman for GamCare, the organisation that helps to rehabilitate people with addictions.
Indeed, the spokesman observed that a mere 0.9 per cent of the population have a gambling problem at present, and this figure is unlikely to rise significantly because of new casinos being constructed.
Speaking to the Independent, he explained: "Casinos in Britain are well regulated and we will be encouraging and helping any new casino to ensure all staff are expertly trained to spot someone who is potentially in trouble and quickly signpost them to our national helpline and counselling services."
The UK's biggest casino facility in the UK was recently opened in Stratford, east London, and has created 440 new jobs.
In addition to this, the Aspers Casino has agreed to pay Newham Council a minimum of £1 million a year from its revenues.
